city scapes black and white photographs

Hello and welcome to the Photography of Kevin McGlothlin.

This site represents over 20 years of photography that I have made in my past both as a professional photographer and as a hobby I keep now. I shoot primarily Black and white film partly because I “see” the light, shadows and textures of a scene more than the color. The objective of my work is to have the viewer see what I saw when I made the image. The photographs here are collection of those images that I feel have achieved that goal.

I shoot film because; well it’s an art, like oil painting. I do have a digital camera and may post some digital images when I feel I can achieve the same goal as I do with film and paper. I also shoot film because I really enjoy dark room work. The art of mixing chemicals, time and temperature development, everything left up to exposing the film correctly and proper development. And the joy of unrolling wet film off a reel [Stainless Steel reel, no plastic in my film room] and seeing the negative images before me. Digital just does not have that.

Printing on paper is another joy along the same line as developing film. Time spent manipulating the tone and contrast of an image with different developers, papers and toning solutions. It’s the joy of standing viewing the final product knowing that I was able to represent, with the use of silver, paper and some chemicals, the world as I see it when I am out with my camera.

Cityscapes are my forte. Although I do live in Colorado I do not get inspired in an Aspen grove as I do in an industrial park or down town of a city. That part of my work I cannot explain other than to say when I do see a snow capped mountain range or old dried tree stump I see the work of Ed Weston and Ansel Adams which are amazing photographs but not what I “see” in the world. But when I look back at the works of W. Eugene Smith, Walker Evans, Margaret Burke-White, Josef Sudek and Paul Strand, I get inspired. And when walking amongst the cold iron and steel of a city or dried timber dwellings of a mining town, I see the light, shadows and textures that makes me the photographer that I am today.

Finally, my work is for sale but if you like my work please sign my guest book and let me know what you think of my photography.
